How early can I apply to become a US citizen? In April of 2007 I will have my greencard for 5 years. Can I apply now since it takes a long time to process or do I have to wait?

If you're not married to a citizen, you can submit your N-400 Application for Naturalization 4 years and 9 months after you became a permanent resident. If you're married to a citizen, you could have applied 2 years and 9 months after becoming a permanent resident.

It is up to you when you want to file. You can file as soon as after you've had your green card for 5 years which in this case is after April 2007. You may want to ask a professional or research this at USCIS.gov

I think you have to wait for the 5yr mark, but the way immigration laws are changing,I'm not sure.Call INS and ask someone.Or even contact an immigation lawyer in the yellow pages. They could tell you over the phone. It doesn't take that long,my sister-in-law got hers in about 6mos. total.

J.D's answer is accurate. I'm an immigration case manager (not seeking free publicity or business, just answering questions).
