What are the best cities to go to in Italy?

We're going there next summer and can't decide what cities to visit.

We took a tour in Italy two years ago. We went to Rome, Venice, Pisa, Florence, and a couple other smaller towns (which I can't remember the names).
The ancient stuff in Rome is awesome, especially the vatican, but the city in general is kind of dirty.
Venice is a must see, but it is kind of a roll of the dice, because when it rains everything gets flooded. We were lucky and were there when it was dry.
If you can get a package tour, I would recommend it. Your tourguide can take you to safe places and communicate with the locals. Actually, some of the smaller towns they took us to were some of our favorites - we never would have found them otherwise. You have to bus from place to place, but it is not bad. The longest trip was like 5 hours the last day back to Rome. Also, at the vatican, they let the tours go in first. If you are not in a tour, you may be waiting for hours to get in. We would love to go back.

Florence and Rome are excellent. I advise not going in the summer given the extreme heat and humidity as well as tourist. Venice is good too, however, in the summer heat the canals can smell.

My sister-in-law just got back from Italt. She said Florence, Tuscany & Rome were great. She said stay away from Venice.
