Technically yes it is, but it is rude what they are doing, and I could care less if I am being rude to them.

What you are describing isn't exactly hanging up on the telemarketers. By telling them to remove you off of their list, you are effectively ending the conversation. If they continue to speak after that, then they are more or less out of line, but as far as you are concerned, the call is over.

By the way, you would be better off to tell them to have your name put on their "Do Not Call" list, which by Federal law they are required to maintain. Furthermore, tell them to have your name added to EVERY do not call list that their company handles as they represent several companies and have separate lists for each one. Even better still, get your number added to the National Do Not Call registry at http://www.donotcall.gov/.

Just remember that telemarketers are also people who work at low wages. In general, they are not directly dialing you, so it's not their choice with whom they speak. It's fine to tell them that you do not want their product and to not call again, but one need not be rude to do so.

If telemarketing annoys you, be on the do not call list.

Treat telemarketers with respect. They are human beings that happen to have terrible jobs. They have families, friends bills etc... You can cut off a sales pitch if you don't want to hear it. Don't swear or do other things.

If you want to be taken off their list get their information and tell them you want to taken off. Do this politely and firmly.

If a telemarketer is abusive to you in speach or by repeated calls, report them to the authorities at once.

Never give personal information over the phone to a telemarketer. I highly reccomend www.scambusters.org

I don't think its rude to hang up on telemarketers if after I tell them I'm not interested and to remove me from their list, they continue to call.

No. It's not rude. It's open season on telemarketers and you can say anything you want to them.

You might try hitting this site and submitting the required info. It will take about a month to take affect, but they can no longer call you after that. It's a law. We successfully got rid of them at our house and it's been nice and peaceful ever since.

Check and see if your state has a "Do Not Call List". New Jersey does and it eliminates telemarketing calls.

As far as the rude thing, politely say, "Thank you, but I'm not interested. Goodbye." Then hang up. If they prattle on as the receiver leaves your ear, oh well.

I don't believe it's wrong to hang up on anyone who invades your privacy. After all, you are in your home, on your time, doing what you need or want to do, maybe having dinner, or perhaps in the midst of an important conversation when the telephone rings. You stop what you are doing to answer your phone thinking it's someone you know, only to discover it's no one you know at all but someone who doesn't care they are disturbing your peace, but only want to sell you something. It is absolutely NOT rude to hang up on them.

Also, you might want to sign up for the national do not call registry. No telemarketer can call you again when you do.

Best of luck!

Not rude at all. Yes, they are most likely people just like us, trying to pay the bills and such, but they still get paid whether or not you're nice to them. Most of the people who have those jobs should know by now that people are going to hang up, pull pranks, possibly even yell at them, etc. It's one of the ways of the world. I have a lovely 'do not disturb' button on my phone that mutes the ring. Pair that with caller ID and the phone will never bother you again :)

If it's a recording, yes.
If it's a human, I'll wait for them to finally pick up their end, then lay it all on the line. I tell them that I'm on the DNC list, to remove me from theirs.

Sometimes I've gotten calls from organizations I told to remove me/that I'm on the DNC. I get more aggressive telling them that I have caller ID (if theirs comes up) and that they are in violation of the DNC law. They will be reported and assessed a $5,000 fine for the phone call.

Sometimes they hang up before I can even tell them about the fine. LOL.

One of these days I will probably snap and use a compressed air horn on them when they call.

You have the right not to be bothered, unless it is to help someone out, then it's your obligation as an upright citizen.
However, these blowhards are out for one thing and one thing only... Money, and they don't care if you are having an emergency.. Try it, when another call, be like "Help, my wife is bleeding I need help". See how quickly they hang up on you! The nerve! At anyrate you are not obligated to put money in people's pocket. I say hang up on them. As a matter of fact press *69 afterwards and try to sell them something!

Nope, I hang up as soon as I ask them to take me off their lists. Make sure you sign your phone number to the govt's no call list. Not sure on the website but you can do a yahoo search for no call list. Good luck. =)
