My girls are using a book called Yo Sacramento! It is a fun picture / word association game that helps make memorizing much easier- they are learnign the names of the presidents in order using a similar book called Yo Millard Filmore.
There are also many many resources with songs to help momorize the states and capitals- you rarely forget what you sing. My daughters memorized all the books of the Bible old and new testament at 3 years old by learning them in song. they still know them all in order and they are 10 and 13.
I suggest finding a CD or tape - easy to find if you google homeschooling resources music memorize- there are several out there . Between that and the Yo Sacramento book- memorizing the states and capitals can actually be fun.

The best way I've found to memorize something is to make a bunch of flash cards and start going through the stack. Every time you get something wrong, you start over. Do it until you can go all the way through the stack in both directions 2 or 3 times in a row. It's not as bad as it sounds, and you can spread it out. I'm sure you can find the list on google.

If you're a visual learner, the best way is to buy a simple map of the USA which doesn't have anything else on it except the capitals of the states. Sometimes, some maps are very complicated as they include a lot of the big cities in the states.

First put them in alphabetical order. Then make a small U.S. map and put the names and capitals on each state. A picture always helps me memorize things. Then just study that U.S.map picture. I hate to say it but as you get older you will forget about 30 percent of them.lol Good luck:) p.s. you probably could google U.S. map with all fifty states and capitals, and study it from internet. I did find a place on internet for abc order of the states, just google that.

Memorize all the "Blue" states first. Once you get that, the rest may be known as "Dumfukistan".

I've always heard that an easy way to memorize things is to be able to relate them to something easier to remember....word association....or make into a song and record it...and listen to it every chance u get...even play it while your sleeping ....good luck

First you learn the states...there's that Fifty-Nifty United States song...
Then when you can say them all without singing the song. Say the states (In alphabetical order) After you say each state, say the capitol...it helps if you have a partner to help quiz you.
