Like any other piece of electronics, you should not purposely subject it to rough treatment. However, my 11yo has had one for some time and it has survived the following; being dropped from up to two feet, being carried in the dog's mouth, being stepped on, being snatched from the charger because someone tripped on a cord stretched across the room, and being left outside all night. It is a fairly sturdy machine.

I bought one for my fiance last Christmas and it has lasted. I know I've dropped it a couple of time from my hands when I've been standing up. And he has two younger brothers that use it sometimes(they are very destructive) and it's lasted through that. So, I would say it's safe to buy.

It's just as fragile as every other small piece of equipment. My advice, don't drop it.
