How old is this child?
It's normal for kids to do that. You can gently take their thumb/fingers out of their mouth, say 'Ickie!' Big boys/big girls don't do that.. keep gently doing this, reminding them.. it's a long process, but with patience, it works.
Or, put a little liquid soap on their thumb and fingers.. but that is way ICKERS! Blah!

It is usually a sign that the child is able to comfort themselves and should be viewed positively. However, to gently break them of the habit, you can
(1) pick them up and comfort them yourself. Teaches the child that people can be a source of comfort.
(2) Use words to say "that makes you feel better, doesn't it? What else would make you feel better?"
(3) For a 2 year old and above, you can begin to say something like "babies suck their fingers, you're getting too old for that" and point out that you and other children don't do it. Don't get into ridicule.
You can also choose to ignore it, trusting that s/he will outgrow it in time.

My mom put Tabasco Sauce on my thumb. But, that was a long time ago. Just the other day I spotted a small bottle in the pharmacy section of Wal-Mart, made just for this purpose. Good Luck! Sorry, I don't remember the name of the stuff. Just ask someone in the pharmacy, they'll know what you're talking about.

You can get this stuff called THUMB you can get it at like wal-mart k-mart or a drug store if you can`t find it ask someone in the drug department because every time i`ve got it it is behind the counter. Its in a very small bottle.its orange and the Dr. tole me you could use it as long as the child is old enough to know that it could burn there eyes,But you paint it on like nail polish and it dries untill they bite it and it burns but not peel the hide off or anything.(I tasted it because I don`t give my kids anything befor I tast it) (so you know what they go through)Any way it wasn`t bad.Good luck.

you could put something safe but yucky tasting on the finger which will make the child not want to suck on their thumb.

How old is the child? My daughter is seeing an orthodontist for braces and they make a device to prevent thumbsucking.

I would think just constantly reminding them they are big now and big kids don't do that. Have they started school yet? if they haven't and they are excited to start school...you could always tell him/her that the school doesn't allow kids who suck their thumbs....maybe it'll be incentive enough to get them to stop...

My mom used some kind of bad-tasting nail polish on me to get me to stop chewing my nails. Maybe you could go to the drugstore and ask for it.

Put something on them they don't like, like vinager. Also, they have things in the pharmacy specifically for that. You put in it on their nails and fingers and it tastes really bitter. I used it to quit chewing my nails but it's for kids. Good luck
