ur parents are thinking in the right track. i'm 20 and i wish my parents did that sooner. question is: u seem smart enough to see that ur parents are crazy, so why worry that you won't be smart with a credit card? just activate it, and leave it for emergencies.

No. Here is the problem with that. You would (I am assuming you are a girl) and you are at the age where you enjoy going to the mall and doing lots of shopping. Now, when you use a credit card, you don't have to pay for those items right away. Because of that, people end up with A LOT of credit card debt, which takes them a LONG time to pay off.
If hypothetically speaking you were to do that, by the time you got to the age where you would buy a house, more than likely you would have HORRIBLE credit because you never paid off your purchases.
And this is just talking as a 13 year old. Assuming you go to college, what happens then? A lot of college age students and people get in trouble with credit card debt. That is saying something.
So to answer your question, I would say it is a dumb thing for you to do. If your parents make you/ get you a credit card, I would either cut it with a pair of scissors right away or put it away somewhere where you will never be tempted to use it.

No because nobody will report on your credit until you turn 18. Basically what your mom and dad will do is they are going to get the credit card on their names and with their credits. All they are going to do is get the card issued with your name as a user, but all the credit will still go to their names. You are not of legal age to enter into a contract (that age is 18). And getting a credit card is a contract.

Nooooo...... I think 13 is way too young. I wouldn't reccommend a credit card for anyone who's still in high school.
I got my first credit card right after graduating high school and spent the next 4 years in college building good credit.

You can't actually get your own credit card until you are 18. A credit card your parents would get you would have your name on it, but it would be tied to their account.
Unless you actually have a need for a credit card, why would they get you one? They will be responsible for paying it back as it is their account.
Credit cards can be very dangerous if they are used incorrectly. Don't be in such a hurry to grow up, your day will come.

As long as it had a spending limit on it and my child already received an allowance so that I could at the same time teach responsibility with a credit card and have her be the one making the payments on it, maybe with a matching thing (like I would match the payments she made). It would surely be a learning experience for her.

I think it would depend on the child.
I know 13 year olds who I would trust with *MY* credit card. I also know some 30 year olds who I wouldn't trust with a pretend credit card from a Fisher-Price play set.
If they're offering one to you, then I think they're showing a great deal of trust in you, and that they believe you're responsable enough to handle having one. It it were me, I'd be honored and thank them for their trust.

i think thats a very good idea so taht in the near future you will have really good credit.. and wont have trouble trying to get loans or anything of that sort. but i do not think its a good idea to let the child hold the card. i think if she wants soemting from the store you should go with them and buy it or even let her go with her friends and buy it but as soon as he/she gets home give it straight back to the parent. i think thats the smartest idea! then the card will never get out of hand.. and it will be used to build credit
