They just want to push fries. The suggestion is one way of giving you the idea to get them. Also, sometimes, you have a brainfart and this question jogs your memory and reminds you that you DID want fries with that.

Sorry guys, but I'm with Mr C Saw on this one. And we do get the same pressure in the UK. Would you really walk into a burger bar and order a quarterpounder horseburger, a large milkshake, an apple-flavoured gunk pie, and oh, whoops, I forgot to order fries, thanks for reminding me!? On the rare occasion I buy that crap food and get asked, "Do you want fries with that?", I just answer, "Did I order fries?". When they say, "No", I then ask, "Well, do you think I wanted any then?". What intrigues me is how the workers in these places have stars on their tunics. What on Earth have the "experts" with 5 stars learnt about taking an order, turning round and picking up a soggy burger (that looks nothing like the picture!) off a shelf, sticking it in a bag and telling me to "Have a nice day now" that those with only 1 star have yet to train up for??

People working the drive thru have to ask. The management makes them ask. It's called suggestive selling, and it's of the mentality that if a customer suggests it, then they want it. It's a gimmick playing on the idea that many people don't want to say no, in turn they make more money.
If the drive thru person doesn't ask, they can get in trouble.

most places you eat at when you order a burger you automatically get fries on less you ask for something different. I bet if you look on the menu it would tell you that.

Yes your right, I guess its natural habit for the cashier to ask that question. Besides it good that ask that question because its a better deal to get a meal deal then just getting a burger.

You shouldn't be eating that junk fast food anyway. It's bad for you and is nothing but a heart attack waiting to happen.

management.. all wankers.. they make employees say that, it's in the manual (in case the customers 'forget to ask').
wot a total waste of time... they make you say that in the UK, not just the states.
