I wouldn't decide to potty train based on age if I were you. My parents thought at 2 1/2 my daughter should start potty training. Now she is almost 3 1/2 and still isn't potty trained. I think she got pressured too early and decided to rebel in a certain way. I would look more for clues that they are ready. I heard if they can hold it long enough to keep a diaper dry through a nap they might be ready. I got the video Once Upon a Potty, and at the end they give a lot of good advice to parents on this. Good luck!

I only have boys but 3 1/2 seemed to be the magic number for us. We tried at 2, 2 1/2 and 3 with my first and it was very frustrating. He knew when he had to go, he just didn't want to do it on the potty. But all the sudden at 3 1/2 we put him in underwear and it took 1 week and he was totally potty trained. Through the night, through his nap and best of all he only ever had 1 accident. There is nothing I hate more than changing and cleaning "accidents." I had to listen to alot of ppl go "He's not trained YET" or "My little Suzie was trained at 23mo..." Yeah but little Suzie was still having 1-2 accidents a day. I would rather wait and just have it done with! We had basically the same exact thing with my other 2 boys. I think their attention span and muscle control is just better if you wait a little longer. It does seem though that girls train a bit earlier.

It's a good idea to wait until a child shows some awareness/ interest in using a potty--for some this comes early; I had a friend whose daughter wanted to use a potty when she was not much more than a year old. On the other hand, some kids just don't get interested until a lot later. If you have read parenting books on toddlers, usually the potty training information shows up in the three year old section, so I guess that is the average time.

Just remember it's not a once-and-for-all thing...they learn, they regress, they learn...try to be patient!

A child can begin to be potty trained at 18 months. That is usually when they start to show an interest. Do it right away! If you wait until the are 2 or 2 1/2, the child usually loses interest and becomes too defiant. You'll have a much harder time teaching them.

A good age to potty train is when your baby has reached one-year. This is the time when he/she has started walking. By this time, you can introduce potty training to your tot. Although the approach to potty training varies with different parents, the key elements to remember here are- positive reinforcement, communication and a whole lot of patience.

I started introducing the potty to my dtr at 10months and at the age of 16 months she's practically potty trained. She's not afraid and it just kinda became a way of life instead of waiting until they are old enough to object. I havent changed a poopy diaper in about 3 months. Good luck.

Some of it depends if is the first child or not. Siblings will tend to want to mimic what their older siblings are doing, so it will happen faster. With our first one we started about 2 and would create a chart with 5 empty 'star' spaces. Every time she would go we would add a star and when she got her first 5 she was able to pick a small prize from the store. Then we went to 10 stars, 15 stars and so on.. Her sisters have followed in the same manner

1 - 3 yrs old...depends on the child's willingness to learn, i.e. maturity. Usually girls potty train first.
