Try Jet Blue airlines... they fly out of a Roc. Syr. NYC and go to many southern states... try your airports website and look for other flights to the area you want for information on what carriers fly to what locations.. book from there

I have used priceline and it really does work. You have to pay for upfront and you don't generally get to pick you schedule but I have never had any problems.

I do suggest the cancellation insurance.

If you absolutely need to go cheap, my brother has used craigslist.org and shared rides with people who have posted ads. I guess it could be dangerous but he has never had a problem so far.

Airtran is based out of Atlanta, and they usually have good fares. Otherwise, try the Greyhound bus.
