There's a tool called Word Count on the top menu bar.

Count words
Some of the content in this topic may not be applicable to some languages.

On the Tools menu, click Word Count.
The results of everything Microsoft Word counts are displayed in the Word Count dialog box.

Click Show Toolbar if you want to recount as you make revisions without reopening the dialog box.
The Word Count toolbar will open in your document.

If you want to include footnotes and endnotes in the count, select the Include footnotes and endnotes check box
If you count part of a document rather than the whole, Word counts the footnotes or endnotes that refer to the selected text.

Word recounts when you select or clear the check box.

Notes

If you display the Word Count toolbar, you can click Recount at any time, or press ALT+C.
You can also view the number of words and lines in a document by clicking Properties on the File menu, and then clicking the Statistics tab.

MS Word has a feature called "Word Count" on the drop down menu titled, "Tools." It is a great time saver. No counting necessary. If you have something highlighted and try to use "Word Count," it will only count the highlighted section.

From the top menu in Word:

Tools --> Wordcount...

If you have Office XP or 2003, then you can enable the toolbar and you will see a box with the current count that keeps up as you type.

There is a really simple way. Goto TOOLS on the menu bar. click on OPTIONS. then click on the Spelling & Grammar tab and click on Readability Statistics. This of course depends on which version of Office you have. Accept these changes. whenever you do a spell check you will see how many words and level of readability. Goodluck!

yes. the best way is you close your document and reopen it then see at the bottom most. it shall tell you no. of words intially and then pages. But this is for hardly 2 - 3 sec. there after if you want to see the word count simply see the document properties there you ll see the no. of words.
