Kids today aren't disciplined in any way or area of life. They think having a hole in their head is an open mind.

40 years ago most of us only had one parent who worked. We didn't have anywhere near the technology that kids have today. There were no personal computers, cell phones or fax machines (we didn't even have push button phones). Cable television did not exist and we were not exposed to sexuality that children today are exposed to. We were however sheltered, racism in certain parts of the United States still existed. I'm a native Californian but I remember having students bused to my junior high school as part of the plan of integration.
Are kids today better off than 40 years ago? In some ways yes, in others no. They're forced to grow up way too soon and can't really enjoy being a kid.

Kids today are being allowed to run the family. They are allowed to disrespect, anyone and anything and this is not all the kids fault or the parents. Parents today are not allowed to raise their kids right. Try punishing your child and see what happens. You will have DHS on you like a chicken on and June bug. 40 years ago we did not even know what DHS was. Today DHS (DEVILS HANDY SERVANTS) will take away children for a spat on the bottom, but children who are really abused, their parents get a second chance. Example not to long ago we had a two year old in our town taken away because his mother was on drugs, 1 month later she was declared clean (right), 2 days later the child was found beaten to deaf, and his mother so high she did not even know the boyfriend had done it, or so she says. I could write you a book on the sickening things my Husband and I have seen.

I wasn't alive 40 years ago, but i have a guess. Today kids are being raised by kids. Girls are having children way too young, and instead of being a parent, they want to be their kids friend. They want their kid to be cool, and want their friends to see their kids being cool. Today discipline is completely different. If you spank your child today they could be taken away from you. TV is a whole lot different as well. Nothing but sex, drugs, sex, drugs, sex, drugs, ohh and violence. Kids are very influenced by what they see on TV. Today you have people asking us on Yahoo answers how to handle their kids. People let their kids do whatever they want, and let their kids run their lives. Parents must remember that they are the parent, and sometimes they are gonna have to do something that their kid may not like. Another reason is so many people having one parent households. Baby mommas and daddies, perfect example of why not to have out of wedlock children. Two is better than one.

Children today are given too many choices and freedoms. 40 years ago, the world was more safe, but children were given limitations, and if those weren't followed they were rightfully punished. My parents raised me the way that they were raised, and I see the difference of how I was raised:learning manners, respect, and treating people equally. Most kids today have absolutely no manners or respect. I know a select group of kids that have been raised with those key subjects involved.

Kids 40 years ago had better parents. Parents these days were the kids who were disciplined and kept in check by their parents. They decided that it wasnt right to hit your kid, or disciplined them in a harsh way... so the kids today get away with alot more things. Teen pregnancy, drug use, school troubles. Kids today are way too pampered and have alot more oportunities that they dont take advantage of because they take them for granted. Had they had better parents, this generation of kids would've done something great for mankind. PARENTS OF TODAY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HOW THEY'VE RAISED THEIR SPOILED KIDS.

Consiquences. 40 years ago, children were punished for their actions in a manner that was actually punishment. Being sent into the corner to be bored for 5 minutes, or being forced to watch a smaller TV in their room is hardly punishment, so children these days aren't learning that there are consiquences to negative actions.

the difference in kids today isn't all the kids fault. it is lazy parenting, i believe. my kids are nothing like some of the kids that go to school with them.

As a rule, they are much less fit and weigh a lot more... probably due to t.v., computers, video games, etc. kids spend more time indoors now than in the past..
