i know that to get through any kind of procedure i just have to think positive (silly i know). i just take a deep breath and remember that if i don't let them do what they need to do now that it's going to be a lot worse later on. also i find that if i don't look at what's going on things turn out much less painful or dreadful then what i thought. actually, there was a study released not too long ago that the dread and fear associated with this kind of thing is worse then the actual procedure itself (sorry, i don't recall the source. i'm sure it was in usa today or something). anyway, take a deep breath and relax--it's all good!! hope everything goes well!!

Not really. Been afraid of needles my entire life and I've tried to get over it, it just never worked. As for the dentist, I'm a grown adult and still hate going. May I suggest something else though, if it's the pain that might be causing your fear, try asking the dentist to give you a little bit of gas first. My dentist used to do this for me when I was younger and the shots didn't hurt. After a while I didn't mind getting them. Also, try bringing a Walkman with you next time to keep your mind on something else. Just a suggestion.

the dentist can put some stuff on the gums you won't feel the needle as much
it's actually a very long, sharp needle but don't be scared. the reason it's long is so it can reach into the back of your mouth. but the needle tip is so sharp you hardly feel it. it feels like he's just reaching in there and firmly grabbing your gums. they poke you in the back of the mouth where the nerve is that leads to your teeth. once they take out that nerve your whole side of your face will freeze up and you feel nothing
but if you're really scared just ask him for that stuff on your gums. also have him tip the chair back in case you start to panic and pass out you'll be better laying down than sitting up.

Talk to your Dentist about alternative pain killers or topical applications which can deaden the skin to the pain of the needle.
I've lived wiht the same fear for 50+ years. I've had lots of dental prolblems along with lazer surgery in my NOSE (no, not fun whatsoever.) The only thing you can do is to relax, breath slowly, and normally, close your eyes and keep telling yourself that the pain will be minimal.

Not too much you can do to get over the fear. But what you can do is substitute a good feeling for a bad. Try thinking of gorgeous hunks playing vollyball on a sun lite beach. Put you mind in a peaceful place, rather than in a sterile, cold dentist's office.

It's strange, sometimes people get drawn to their fears, I hate spiders but I managed to catch one in a bottle the other day and I couldnt stop looking at him, like I was actually interested in what I hate, maybe your fear could be the same? Needles will be uncomfortable, personally you can make time 'speed up' during the injection by mentally trying to focus on the one moment and make it last as long as possible (if your not confused already). During my tubercolosis Jab I tried to focus all my concentration on making time apss as slowly as possible, I failed, and the jab was done before I knew it. Try it, it works.

Not really. Just take deep breaths and try to relax. Most dentist have sedation dentistry so it helps you to be calm and relaxed. Has far as you fear of needs when you get shots or have blood drawn don't look, look away and just breath as deep as you can and think Happy thoughts.
