cfluehr - I agree, learning a foreign language takes time. But most of them aren't even trying and if we continue to make it easy they never will.

The answer to your question is YES!!!
Since America is an English speaking country, then all signs, billboards, phone books, etc, etc, etc SHOULD BE in English only!!!
We have foreigners from MANY countrys that live in the U.S. Are we going to have to print everything in THOSE languages too??!! Chinese,Italian,French,Japanese, you SEE my POINT??!! If we do that for ONE nationality, then are we going to have to do this for ALL nationalitys eventually???You see where this could lead??!!
Try to imagine calling information, and having to WAIT for thirty minutes while the recordings say: "press 1 for english, press 2 for german, press 3 for spanish press 4 for italian
Also,if i went to live in, or visit a foreign country, i would NOT expect everyone in that country, to CATER to me!!!!
I would LEARN the language of THAT country, before i went!!

Nice racist question and some fun racist responses...there is a middle ground...
I do think that people coming to America should learn English, but for those of you that have studied a foreign language (looks like not many of the ignorant morons in this post), how long did it take you to even get semi-conversational? Years...now, imagine trying to live in a place where it's going to take you years to be proficient enough to communicate...think of all the troubles you'd encounter, all of the things you'd miss...those billboards and other services that are provided in multiple languages help people get started here (and, by the way, boost the US economy)...I'd love to see you hypocrites get around in another country without signs provided in English...you'd be the ones crying then...
Now, most of you probably don't care about any of this because you've never left your trailers, but that's why you're miserable, isolationist and ignorant Americans that give the rest of the country a bad name...you're the ones that should leave...maybe then you'd gain some perspective.

For adults, learning a second language isn't easy, and English is one of the hardest in which to become fluent. I notice that some of the most virulent respondents on this site have faulty English language construction and spelling. I live in Mexico and we speak and understand a kind of Spanglish which is acceptable. I would like to point out that "Spanish" billboards would indicate that they were manufactured and produced by Spain/Spaniards...a Spanish "language" billboard appears to be the one in contention. English language comprehension and construction are the marks of fluency.

I love immigrants in this country but I am getting a little tired of Spanish taking over. For example to get a job around where I live you are more then likely going to have to know Spanish to compete with the other applicants. Why is it my fault that I'm American and I only know English? My bf's mom has been here for like 40 yrs or something and she refuses to learn English? Whats up with that?!!! She expects ME to learn Spanish so she can talk to me?!! That's ridiculous. I think that if they want to come here they should make the effort to learn the language. If they want to take advantage of all our freedoms then they should learn.

Ah- I 'assume' that you are one of the many people in this country that think learning\using a different language within the U.S. is unnecessary [possibly even 'Un-American'?]...
Well, if you are really uber-American, you probably have unwavering support for capitalism. Multi-lingual billboards are blatant MARKETING tactics: capitalism at work! If you want to sell you products to more people, you have to attract them...
Heck- even BUSH dabbles in Spanish when he wants the 'Latino vote'...

Get on with your life already! they would not have Spanish billboards if there were not a tremendous Spanish-speaking population in this country. What would you suggest, sending them all to the middle east to be hit by American missiles?

I'm from Venezuela and I think that if you choose to live in this country you have to follow their rules. Back in my country we have lots of immigrants from Italy, Portugal, Germany and all of them speak Spanish, I wouldn't like if I go to any town or city in my country and find out that you can't communicate there because a group of immigrants decided to speak in their language there. Just because it's easier for you speak in your native language doesn't mean that all the people in this country have to learn your language to make things easier for you. Sorry

Hmmmm .... I'm not sure about that ... if they advertise in Spanish I assume they want to reach a Spanish speaking target ... I ignore them anyway, because I don't speak Spanish, so I don't know what they're trying to say .... I imagine that if they wanted my custom, they would speak to me in English .... so obviously they don't, and obviously I don't go where I'm not wanted ....

Tu eres loco. Si una compania quiere comunicar en espanol es su derecha.
Es el gobierno que no necesita gastar dinero para traducir en espanol.
