In the early days of flying when navigational aids and tools were not even invented pilots of an aeroplane would look over the Left window of the cockpit to see river, railway line, electricity poles and sea coast to help him to guide him to his destination. Since then, I was told, because of this habit and as tradition the pilot of an airplane is always seated on the Left of the cockpit (flight deck).

actually the pilot in command can sit anywhere he wants. if you are taking a flight lesson the instructor will most likely be in the right seat but until you have your license he is still the pilot in command. traditionally by design the access to controls is set up for the pilot to be in the left seat.
