There are many differing opinions about this subject among the scholars.
In one point, masturbation helps release sexual tension in the unmarried person that could possibly lead to things considered much more haram, like fornication and adultery.
The second point is that one can become addicted to the habit to the point that he prefers that over relations with his wife. His wife needs as much satisfaction and gratification as he does, so he would be denying his wife a right that God gave her. In this case it would certainly be haram.
The majority of opinions say that it is haram, but if this small haram deed could prevent a much larger haram deed, it would be preferred.Though prayer and thikrAllah are preferred over all, and is better for the soul.
