I have no experience with African American hair, but I do know that your hair has unique needs. Make an appointment with a hairdresser who specializes in your hair type. Most will give a free consultation. If you want to do the coloring yourself, just say you need to think it over before making an appointment, and then go to a beauty supply store and get the stuff you need.

Use semi permanent hair color. You can go lighter than you usually do and the gray will be covered and your hair will look like you have highlights. The color will gradually wash out and you won't have roots showing.

Ask the colorist at your hair salon. He/she will be able to tell you what would look best on you.
