In times gone by, if a lady wanted to attract the attention of a gentleman, she would 'accidentally' drop her hankerchief for him to retrieve for her. Conversation could then be allowed.

In school it was always a pencil or pen dropped on the floor by their desk to get a guy's attention :) Or the ever-famous "eye contact."
But, with everyone, it varies today. It depends on the woman, some are more forward and not afraid to speak directly to a man. Times have changed, my friend.

Unfortunately, these days gentility has gone by the wayside and many women (notice I didn't say "ladies") just drop their panties.
Those who are a tad more subtle usually smile and make eye contact, and some even approach first and strike up conversation.

Well since most girls today dress like sluts, I doub't they'd have to drop anything....LOL
I suppose she could drop her cell phone.
