To speed up your PC:

First find out what all is running at start up and shut down what you don't want. Download StartupCPL, it installs as a control panel applet, is very easy to use and will make doing this a snap.

Next download AdAware, a spyware scan utility and clean out any potential spyware.

Grisoft offers an antivirus program called AVG it's free and it's really great. Better than many programs you have to pay for.
As for speed, make sure your comp is cleaned of viruses and adware. That will make a huge difference sometimes.
Do a google Search for AGV

Heres some easy ways to speed up your computer! Check for problems as well to see what's going on with your XP updates with these programs. Virus's generally attack the anti-virus program to remain undetected by your running program. It truly sucks but the checkups will help you with any virus's and spyware.

Run the spyware and virus programs. Download system mechanic for the 30 day trial. You will love it!

Good luck! For the spyware scan and virus protection free try any of these :

Here you can one year free of eTrust from Computer Associates:

(much better than the free anti virus programs)

Adding more RAM (e.g. doubling what you have now) is the
most effective way. (Defragmenting your hard drive and erasing
unneeded files (i.e. emptying your hard drive) also help.
