It sounds as if your brother is suffering with bi-polar, which is a common name for manic depressive. The proper medication and treatment is in order here. He should be seen by a psychiatrist for this and can be properly diagnosed and treated. There are many medications available that can help your brother. But does he want help for himself? Does he recognize he has a problem? These first two are crucial for him. If he doesn't see a problem for himself, the liklihood of him seeking help is slim to none.

Talk to him about it and ask him if he wants help. Then if he agrees to that, make an appointment to see his family physican and he or she will refer your brother to a good psychiatrist.

Good luck to you and your brother! I hope he feels better soon!

Unfortunatley, there is no "cure". There are lots of different types of medication but a psychiatrist will have to prescribe them and almost all of them take at least 2 weeks to have any effect. Even then, it is trial & error, and the medications may have to be changed. Manic-depressive (also known as bi-polar) is something your brother and all of those who care about him will deal with for the rest of his life. Speaking from experience, let me just say don't get your hopes up that it's going to get a lot better. Chances are good that even if he starts taking medication he will not stay on it. The suicide rate for people diagnosed as bi-polar is extremely high. Good luck and you will be in my prayers.

Yes...that's it. Or he's doing drugs. Similar symptoms. See if you can't get him help.
