A course is def helpful in the real world. You can major in almost anything and with the PR class under your belt it is going to do nothing but boost your interpersonal and communication skills. Depending on what you want to do it would be helpful in sales, marketing, customer service etc. You might be able to get a job with a local firm, radio station, restaurant etc that wants to do some advertising.

Ok, I know for regular people, public relations is something of a personality booster. But, if you're curios and interested in taking up public relations, all I could say is go ahead. Public relations is an industry that basically has a growing impact nowadays. If you are asking where you could possibly get jobs on PR after graduation, there are a lot of companies and industries that look for good PR professionals. You could become a PR consultant for politicians, or work for government or for private companies or for other PR agencies. And if you are really into public relations, you could start your own PR company and get clients from around the world. PR is now invading the Internet and there are actually a lot of companies outsourcing for PR in other countries to save cost. PR's role in society is actually getting very important. You would know more about this when you decided to land a PR's career. =)
