A dog will usually "go" where another has gone before (they aren't Trekkie's). They do this to 'send a message' to other animals, I've heard a dog trainer call it "pee mail" or in this case, "poo mail". A dog will urinate or defecate as a way to communicate to other dogs in the area, it lets others know they were there. That way, later on in the park, they can identify other dogs by their scent. Ever wonder why a dog will sniff the privates and back end of other dogs, then look at them playfully? They're saying "I know you, you dumped on that corner over there last week!"

My dog usually looks for spots where other dogs have already pooped. Then she tries to out poop them, which makes that her territory.

When we moved into our new home my dog wouldn't pee because the ground didn't have his scent... "I" actually had to pee on the ground in order to get him to go...

Hey, I work with a rescue, so I've done all sorts of crazy things in order to help our foster dogs! LOL

They usually look for other smells where other animals may have done their business such as a skunk, and if they like it they go.
