I don't mean random sounds that resemble words but when your baby actually seemed to know what or who it the word was referring too.

apart from 'no', 'mum', and 'dad' my eldest daughter's first recognisable word was 'helicopter'.

it wasn't exactly 'helicopter' - more sort of 'ogacogat' - but it was quite clear what she was referring to. we lived near a major arterial road system in a midlands town. ann had always been fascinated by the traffic patrols.

when my youngest daughter was a few weeks old we moved to zambia in central africa. dwynwen was a sharp child, but even before she could crawl we could see that she was going to be very private.

shortly after dwynwen's first birthday we took a safari holiday. we were surprised by how much baby dwynwen clearly loved being out of the city, and how many new behaviours she tried in those two weeks.

in the middle of the second week we had taken an open landrover out onto the bundu, but there was nothing to see - sometimes you can drive for an hour and catch nothing but the occasional fish-eagle. even those drives have their interest.

our driver tired eventually, and took us for a pause into the shade of some baobab. there was a watercourse nearby, and a mixed eucalyptus grove opposite - but no fauna of any sort.

'i think today we no se 'um,' said the driver, 'maybe tomorrow be better then.'

dwynwen raised her arms where my wife was holding her and began beating the air.

'SHRAAAAFFFF!' she screamed.

and as dwynwen screamed four large, spider-legged females moved out of the eucalyptus opposite, where they had been hidden from all but one of us on that truck.

my youngest daughter's first real word was 'giraffe'.

I doubt anyone will believe me but my eldest daughter said raar-bi-t (rabbit) at about four months old she was still rolling not crawling. My dad was playing with her on the floor and holding a toy rabbit and saying the word to her telling her what it was. It was a real shock to hear her say it even dad was amazed but it is true. All the other kids said the usual Da Da type stuff but Annie said rabbit.

such issues as this happens, tell her no longer to blame herself as toddler receives into all scrapes and there remains worse to come back, I actual have a 4 month previous or maybe as she became some weeks previous i tapped her head as i became getting her from her motor vehicle seat out of the motor vehicle she cryed yet didnt get a bruse purely keep telling her tnat the toddler is fantastic and to only delight in her toddler because the toddler needs her and he or she isn't any good crying because the toddler will turn to be missrible like her because it is the only ingredient the toddler will now to do good success and let me knp0w.

I don`t have kids but I remember my cousin`s first word: dog. He was about 10 months at the time.
He would repeat it day after day all the time. How did he learn? His sister (who was older) wanted a dog and,so, she taught him that so that her parents would give them a dog.
It didn`t work, though.
