if you were looking up dictionary in the dictionary then you would probably already know what dictionary meant so why would you be looking it up....common sense

So we can have conversations like this...because if it wasn't in the dictionary, someone would ask why the word dictionary isn't in the dictionary because that would be just ironic and perhaps at some point in time it wasn't and Webster grew tired of people asking so they added it...now they're being hit with why it's in there...it's a lose lose situation for Webster...this was the best i could do for a thursday morning

So when a child asks their parent how to spell "dictionary" the parent can say "look it up in the dictionary." The child will then go look up the word, not realizing they could just look at the cover for the spelling.
A better question is: what is another word for "thesaurus"?
