I would suggest that you contact accredited volunteer organisations, e.g. http://www.workingabroad.com that specialise in placement at host organisations. This way you will be able to get some support whilst you are at the charity. Also, make sure you know beforehand what your interests and preferences are, and which countries/areas you would like to consider.

You could volunteer at your local Red Cross if you need to research it try 'Yahoo search : Volunteer Red Cross(your area). They sometimes need volunteers for as easy a thing as cleaning the CPR training aide dolls.
