I currently use Windows Movie Maker, but the quality is terrible. I'm looking for something with capabilities seen in Premiere pro.....is there any free or open-source software out there that has this?

For about $100 you can get Sony Vegas. This is what I use for quick video editing. It's got everything that you'd want to use in Premiere Pro and it's about 1/5th of the cost. Check it out.

not legal ones....

you can download trial versions and what not...or you can just go out and buy Vegas (home version) for about 70 bucks. You won't find anything with the quality of premier pro out there for free though...not if you want it legal.

That program is expensive because of what it is (and, of course, because it is one of the best). Very complicated program indeed...

I would suck it up and go with Sony Vegas, if I were you. You can download a free trial version of the pro version, at cnet.com.

Check out ULead Video Studio 9. Easy to use, video looks great... I'm sure it costs something though but it's worth it.

If you like to see a couple of video clips (30 second ones) I made with ULead, they're posted here:
