I'm going to see the Colore Purple on Broadway in New York on September 16,2006. The play is at 8pm. Is the dress formal or informal and give examples.

Thanks

Lady V

A lot of tourists are too casual at the theater. When I go I usually make a casual outfit elegant instead of really dressing to the nines because you do want to be able to sit relatively comfortably. Try slim black pants and a black button-down or some other tailored black top. Or try a pair of fresh, dark, Seven jeans and a kitten heel shoe and a slinky but appropriate top. Just stick with neutrals and blacks and whites and you'll fit in at any occasion.

Anything on Broadway should be considered formal. Not in the way of an evening gown, but you definitely shouldn't wear jeans. I went to see Les Miserables on Broadway before the show closed in February a few years back. I wore black skirt, top, and black boots. Everyone else there was dressed just about the same. I didn't see anyone in like a sun dress or jeans. Think of it as a night to dress up and eat up everything New York City has to offer.

i wear a nice knit shirt and slacks or a sports jacket and slacks with a dress shirt. just depends. ladies generally dress up a little more. i wouldn't get way decked out unless i was going to a very fancy restaurant after the play like le cirque!
suggestion for after the play:
make a reservation at joe allen's. i f possible ask for a table when you first walk in the bar area. celebrities frequent this restaurant. you can see them come and go. the food is good and not over priced. we have been 3 times and saw several celebrities on 2 of the occasions. the food was good!
after that make reservations at elaines, have some dessert and star watch!

Its casual. Alot of it also depends on if you are going out before or after the show. Where something casual but comfortable. You'll be sitting in a seat for 2 hours with a short intermission. I wouldn't go with jeans and sneakers, but something a bit more dressier than that.

Currently, informal. Or to put it better, what may be called business casual. No jeans for guys, hard shoes preferred.

Jackets and ties or evening dresses are not required. But check with the restaurant you are planning to go to for their code if any.

It totally depends on where you're going after. My friends went and said the play was great. They wore jeans with heels and like cute little tops... like dress blouses. Add some cute earrings and you're ready to go. You know how to dress up jeans. Just called my friend and she says that some people even wore sweats. The dress code is really not that serious, just have fun.

Here are some examples of tops you can wear:

I usually mix the formal and casual. Nice jeans with a pair of heels and a nice shirt..... My bf usually wears nice jeans with loafers and a button-down shirt. A lot depends on where you're going before or after.

People come in all sorts of attire. People usually dress depending on where they are eating dinner beforehand. You'll see people in a suit and in shorts and a t-shirt. Most people where a sort of business casual attire. Jeans aren't that common.

Casual elegant! A wisp of a summer dress with a light wrap or perhaps, some nice linen pants and a sexy "tee" and a light jacket?

your best bet is to wear a "little black dress" and a pair of comfortable heels. you would be able to go "anywhere" with confidence.

*oh, make sure you bring a thin scarf or light sweater, some theaters are really chilly.
