Muslim "dates" are a bit different than the western style. In western societies, dates are to get to know someone a little better to tell whether or not you like this person. It's common to move on to other boyfriends/girlfriends afterwards, sleep with a few, maybe, just maybe, end up marrying one.
In the Muslim society, we search for certain characteristics in a person that we want from a future husband/wife. So basically instead of just hanging out and "letting things happen" or "waiting to fall in love" we are on a mission to find that person that meets our desires. Will they be a good husband/wife and father/mother? How well do they handle stress? What plans do they have for the future? Are they kind-hearted and pious?
Muslim "couples" always meet in the company of family or groups of friends, never in private. This also can be of great benefit, others can see something good or bad in your possible mate that you are too starry-eyed to see. Plus the friends and family of the intended can fill you in on things about him/her. They do everything with the intentions of getting married and preparing for it. Once they decide that this is the one, they become engaged and start planning the wedding. All done without any risk of pregnancy, STD's, broken hearts or flared tempers.
Here in the west we tend to romanticize marriage too much. Someone may make our heart melt, but eventually that goes away and we're not always pleased with what we're left with. This in turn leads to separation, divorce, affairs, and broken homes.

Muslims live in many different cultures. In some cultures, they are permitted to date, although dating may involve chaperones or groups. In many Muslim cultures, however, arranged marriages are the norm. Depending on the culture, the partners may meet before the marriage, or they may not.
