Keep it casual. It is a double-edged sword to write to him (which is why you are asking the question I assume).

First off, it is a teacher - and it is also something that will be more friendly than grade-grabbing.

Your advantage is postcards not having much room to write on in the first place. So send something with an interesting picture...which you can also elaborate on. For example, if a museum...mention a particular item inside. Or figure out something that can trigger a mention of the class itself.

The teacher will be glad to know that you remembered something past the exam's completion. :)

Most importantly, be sure to spell properly as well as have decent grammar. It is a teacher after all.

Probably just a few sentences will suffice. Here is a possible example...
[let's pretend it's a literature teacher, since I have no idea what the class subject was you were in]

Dear Mr. ____ ,

I had some time so I decided this was a perfect time to send you a postcard. The weather has been pretty good, so I have been able to see a lot while I've been here.

The picture on the front is one of the places I visited. They had a lot of displays of colonial dress - and it made me think back to that paper we had to write on The Crucible. I still wonder how Giles Corey will fit into my life when I am older.

Anyway, there isn't much space on the card. Hope you enjoyed it.

Your student...

-Me :)

Well, that's something you can crib off format-wise if you have writer's block.

Best of luck... I am sure your teacher will be glad you took some time to drop a line. I can *almost* promise he won't grade it and return it with red ink. ;)

Pretend you are writing to a grandparent - talk about the sights or the weather...something local to the postcard...they don't have much room you can't mess up too bad!

p.s. I love nighttime skyline post cards - they really show off a city - send him one of those!

How did he ask, formally or informally?

Write accordingly.

Give a gist of your holiday activities, like hiking, picnics, names of books read, sports activities participated in, etc.

why is he asking you to do this?
Did he ask anyone else to do this?
I would not write him @ all, unless it was an assignment that I was going to be graded on.
