Sushi is the most famous Japanese dish outside of Japan, and one of the most popular dishes among the Japanese themselves who usually enjoy sushi on special occasions.
You can get all different types of sushi.
In Japanese cuisine, sushi is a food made of vinegared rice combined with various toppings or fillings.
In Japan the word sushi refers to the rice, not the fish. Sushi toppings or fillings can include seafood, meat, vegetables, mushrooms or egg, Sushi toppings may be raw, cooked, or marinated. In the Western world, sushi is often misunderstood to mean clumps of rice topped with raw fish, or even simply raw seafood, which is properly called sashimi.
There are various types of sushi. Sushi served rolled in nori (seaweed), is called maki (rolls). Sushi made with toppings laid onto hand-formed clumps of rice is called nigiri; sushi made with toppings stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu is called inari; and sushi made with toppings served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice are called chirashi-zushi, or scattered sushi.
I hope that helps. Try searching google!

In the good ol' USA sushi is often misunderstood to mean clumps of rice topped with raw fish, or even simply raw seafood, but that is another type of food, entirely. Unlike what a lot of people would say "Sushi" is not just "raw fish". In Japan (and within Japanese cuisine) the word sushi refers to the rice. Of course, not to confuse anyone, "Sushi" toppings or fillings may include almost anything to include fish. All these things used as toppings and fillings could conceivable be raw, cooked, or marinated.

Sushi is a Japansese food that consists of a sticky white rice that is formed either into small cakes or rolls. The cakes are topped with small peices of fish (cooked or raw), shellfish, or egg. The rolls can have almost anything in them from just veggies (often small peices of cucumber, carrots or avacado), fish (again, raw or cooked), shellfish, sesame seeds, roe (caviar), and many other things. The rolls are often wrapped in thin sheets of dried seaweed. They are then cut into bite sized slices.
"Sashimi", on the other had, has no rice, and is just small peices of raw fish.
All kinds are usually served with a small bit of wasabi (a very spicy green horseradish paste), some thin sliced pickled ginger (to cleanse the palate) and soy sauce.
I recomend California Rolls if you want to try sushi, but are apprehensive. They have cooked crab, cucumber and avacado rolled with rice in nori (the thin, dried seaweed). Often they are sprinkled with sesame seeds. It's a good beginner roll.
If you want to try something with raw fish, tuna is fantastic. Not fishy tasting at all.

Sushi is Japanese in origin and is rice-based. It usually comes in the form of a roll filled with rice and raw, cooked ,or marinated fish, seafood, and vegetables. It is usually served in bite-size pieces with sauces and/or wasabi.
In North America it is considered a delicacy and is usually quite expensive due to the exotic ingredients.

Sushi is not the raw fish at all. It is the rice to which the name refers - specially prepared vinegared rice which is then served with various toppings and/or fillings. The rice topped with raw fish that we tend to call Sushi is in fact Sashimi.
And it is all very very yummy!

sushi is a japanese food dish.
It is not necessarily raw fish, although this can be used.
Commonly, sushi is short-grain-sticky-rice, fish, meat or veg, then wrapped in a piece of seaweed.
You get it with Wasabi (green paste) which has a very strong mustardy effect.
Also, pickled ginger which should be used between sushi pieces, to cleanse the palate.
Also, soy sauce for dipping.
