Hello. Yes, I do believe in God, and I am born again. This question is because I can not find "Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust" in the Bible". I know that it's in the Bible, but I can't find it. I need to know, because at my grandmothers funeral, a couple of weeks ago, they did not say this at the grave site, and it bothered me a lot. My stepfather does believe in God also, but he wants it to be proven to him that it's in the Bible, because he just thought that people said that at funerals because they wanted to, he didn't know it was really in the Bible. Can anyone please tell me exactlly where it is? I have been looking for the last couple of weeks. Thanks

Passage Genesis 3:19:
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return to the earth, out of which thou wast taken: for dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return.

This is what we Catholics hear when receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday.

the phrase you quote is a reminder of this scripture.

"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust -- A phrase from the English burial service, used sometimes to denote total finality. It is based on scriptural texts such as 'Dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return' (Genesis 3:19), and 'I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee' (Ezekiel 27:18).

Sorry but it isn't in the Bible. You can go to study tools at Bible Crosswalk and type in "ashes" and you will see it isn't there. The phrase has been used so much by ministers that everyone assumes it's in the Bible. There are a number of phrases like this that people think is in the Bible. So don't worry that they didn't use it at your Grandmothers funeral.
