Some DOS commands like ipconfig, ping, etc. don't work (there are much more) while others like cd, dir or cls, do. I want to get much more familiar with the command line so this is a bit disappointing. What can be done with this? I use Windows XP SP2 by the way.

Are you opening a DOS window with Windows and running the commands within the window, or running the commands from the "Run" option on the start menu.

If the second, most of the commands you have listed as not working (ping, ipconfig, etc) will run so fast that the window opens, displays, and closes before you can see the results.

Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > type: cmd) and then run the commands.

You are having a problem with Path in Command prompt

All commands that are working are internal commands. Not working commands are external commands. check your path and make it sure folders [winnt] and [winnt\system32] are there in the path.
