Good question! I always thought of that, every time i saw a sign that said that. Well I don't really think they would let you dine without pants on. The "no shirt" goes for the guys and the "no shoes" in fact goes for everybody. Maybe you should try going in without pants on and back your reason up with what the sign says.

no, the reason that the sign doesn't say no pants no service is that you can walk in the street without shoes, socks, or a shirt on (except women) but you would get arrested for not wearing pants.

Reminds me of a Far Side-ish cartoon when a guy walks into a similiarly restricted restaurant with no pants on, a shirt tied around his head and shoes dangling by the laces from his.....

Yea - you can try - hoping that they would allow. Soon after chasing you out, they would change the sign which reads, "No Shirt, No Shoes, (even with pants on!), no service."

I believe you're talking about some really fancy restaurants. When you attend a formal ceremony or something like that, and need to dress up because it's a polite thing to do. I think it's just the same when you go to one of such fancy restaurants.

If you have shorts on. If is against the law to expose your privates in public. Though there is no sign on the door prohibiting public decency, these are well known laws. Thus the manager of the restaurant would be well with in his rights to call the police and have you put in jail.

You could try, but I doubt that they'd let that slide, because it's generally assumed that you wouldn't be walking around without pants or shorts. Come to think of it, I believe Johnny Knoxville tried that on on old episode of jacka$$ once.

I suppose that if you were so short that a normal sized T-Shirt would go down to your ankles, you could go in without pants on.

Hmmm...makes sense to me.
