I am a vegetarian (vegan), and consume large amounts of beans, fruit, and vegetables on a daily basis. I seem to have gas almost always, which started about a year ago when I adopted a vegan diet. Changing my diet is really not an option. The vegetarian diet has improved all aspects of my health, I feel absolutely great and am very healthy. I have tried over the counter remedies to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried digestive enzymes? Beano is one kind, with an enzyme to help digest complex carbohydrates. If that doesn't do the trick, read labels and find a supplement containing all three of the following types of enzymes and take the recommended dosage after each meal:

- Lipases - Lipases function in the digestion of fats, oils and fat-soluble vitamins.

- Amylases - These break down starch molecules into smaller sugars. Amylases also break down carbohydrates into maltose.

- Proteases - are responsible for breaking down protein into smaller amino acids.

These should help immensely.

Acidophilus, the live culture in yogurt, can also be helpful when taken daily. You can find it in capsules if you don't eat dairy products. Between acidophilus and digestive enzymes you should see a big improvement.

Taking activated charcoal capsules at the first sign of bloating, nausea, or gas can be helpful, as the charcoal absorbs symptom-causing bacteria and works pretty quickly to end gas. Charcoal is suitable for occasional use only, as the charcoal can also soak up good bacteria and minerals. So, charcoal isn't a daily solution - save it for potentially embarrassing situations.

I've found that the more beans I eat, the easier it becomes to digest them without gas. The first six weeks on a high bean diet are quite gassy, but then the gas goes away. Are you eating beans every day, or just occasionally?

In the meantime, try adding ginger and/or fennel seeds to your diet. Both will help digestion and reduce gas. When all else fail, try beano.

From your details, it appears you have tried Beano and Gas-X then.

If you are having regular bowel movements, and drinking your 64 oz of water a day, you should not be having much of a gas build-up. You may try switching to soy for your protein for a while and see if it is the beans that are the culprit.

ACTIVIA or KIEFER added to your diet. Both include active probiotics which will help with the gas problem naturally, add calcium to your diet and make you feel more satisfied and less hungry. Try eating a small cup of ACTIVIA with breakfast and another at night or drink some KIEFER (I love the Peach!). It doesn't take long to feel the difference.

By the way, the doctor told my daughter in law that when the baby burbs or farts it prevents colic. Same with adults. :}

Feel better soon!
