I am an ultra orthodox Jewish woman, and like you say I do have to dress modestly. But, everything else you think is totally wrong! We don't feel like it is a burden or even that it is unfair! We - and I speak for every Jewish girl I know - are proud to dress like that.
IT IS A PRIVELAGE, NOT A BURDEN!!! Think about a diamond. Do people just let their expensive diamonds roll around, get ruined and exposed. Of course not! We Jewish woman are even more special that diamonds. We are kept carefully wrapped in a velvet jewelry box so that nobody can see the beauty withing. The beauty is kept special and sacred until the girl gets married and she can share it with her soul mate and husband.
As you see your feelings are totally off regarding the way Jewish woman dress. I would be ashamed to run around half as exposed as a regular american does in the summer. It is a privlage for us to dress that way and a pleasure. It shows us that we are special.
Here is a quick overview of the laws of modesty that every Jewish girl is supposed to follow according to the torah:
1) Hair only has to be covered once a woman is married. Then, only her husband may see it.
2)We may not wear pants, and the skirts have to cover the knees at all times - even when sitting or jumping. That means that the skirt should be 3 to 4 inches below the knee.
3) Skirts and tops may not be fitted (although the sleeves can be). The sleeves have to cover the elbows at all times and the chest has to be covered until the collerbone (by the neck).
4) We must wear sock/tights at all time - although it is permissible to see the shape of the leg under the knee. Over the knee, the foot must be totally covered and others may not see the shape of the thighs - very strict.
5) Everything about a woman should be modest including the way she speaks (the tone of voice, how loud, nice language)the way she acts, and her look in general. I was taught that if the hair of a girl is longer than her shoulders then she should pull it together in a pony - so that it should be modest.

To begin with, you fail to grasp is that France is a secular state in which freedom FROM religion is considered as important as freedom OF religion. In American the latter is true but not the former. The recent case involving the Westboro Church is a good example of the difference. In the USA the Supreme Court reads the first amendment as meaning that these loathsome fanatics can intrude on the private grief of families to picket funerals and insult the dead to the distress of the living. Their claim to a religious belief, no matter how vile or simply absurd gives them license to do this. I suspect that such would not be the case in France. Religion is not license and has no more special right than any opinion. Next, France is a modern liberal state and will not allow religion to be used as an excuse to demean and subjugate women as the medieval dictates of too many Muslims would have. Even if women claim they are doing such things voluntarily the French state will not permit it any more than they would allow someone to sell themselves into slavery. As a women you will be treated better in France than you would be Saudi Arabia or any other right wing Muslim majority state. You can drive a car in France while such activity would be denied to you in Saudi Arabia. You needn't fear being beaten by the Religious police for "immodesty" , murdered by your family members to preserve their alleged honor, or forced into an arranged marriage.

I am Jewish, I I have no idea what you are talking about. Orthodox women dress modestly but then again so do the men. Also I feel sorry for any man telling a Jewish woman what to do or not to do.
So I don't know where you get your facts but you might want to recheck them.

Yes Orthodox women are extremely modest, but only a very small percentage of Jews are Orthodox.
Everything an Orthodox Jew does is to remind themselves of their obligations to God. They consider it a joy and a privilege -- not a burden. There are no religious police.

each of God's books teach that women should be covered, even in Christianity. Muslim women, Jewish women and Christian women, even though the Christians choose not to do this, I only see nuns who are covered.

as quitrill wrote, both men and women have standards for modesty. its just considered normal. I suppose nudists find normal society barbaric in our requiring that people wear clothes at all. *shruggs*
either way, I just wanted to write to mention that the "bed sheet with a hole in it" idea is just a myth.

I don't think it's the Jewish women that suffer that ordeal, but they do have to do the nasty through a bedsheet.
