I'm officially "mildly depressed", and suffer from low self-esteem. I'm taking fluoxetine (prozac) in a low dose. I can still get up in the morning, and enjoy certain things in life - but they're just distractions, and it all seems futile. I often think, in a fairly calm and collected way, that I'd be better off dead. I've struggled with cognitive-behavioural therapy, but find it difficult to change my ways of thinking. I'm curious about hypnotherapy...

Hypnotherapy can be very effective for positive reinforcement which can help with depression. Before you go to a hynotherapist, you must realise that all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis and you are going to be doing a lot of the work yourself. It's about being open to changing your attitude and mind-set. You have to really want it for yourself or it won't work.

Good luck!

Hi,
I was on Fluoxetine for a while. I went to psychotherapy, I don't know if this is like your cognitive-behavioural.
Psychotherapy is good for me (I am still going once a week)

There I can talk about absolutly anything at all that I want to, I lead the way in the conversation and if I can't think of what to say he will just ask about my day. It's really good to be able to have a total stranger, someone who you can tell things to without fear that they will come back to haunt you.

I don't believe in hypnotherapy. I think you can't really reach a person that way but thinking and talking about things out loud triggers other thoughts and feelings. I feel better connected to myself.

If you are calm and collected in thinking about death I would recommend psychotherapy as you should be able to talk about it freely.

How about religion? Do you think it may help your situation?
Choose your response everyday. Tell yourself every morning : "Today is a new day. I can choose to be happy or down. I choose to be happy."Then, smile at yourself. Start off with some soothing music and hopefully you can feel better. I am also feeling a bit depressed. I sympathise with you. Tell yourself, life is beautiful. how about analysing the cause of your depression with a religious counsellor? :-)

Depression is caused by a variety of factors, ranging from biochemical and genetic factors to psychological and environmental factors. For years now, physicians have turned to medication for the treatment of depression in their patients, readjusting the biochemical functions of the individual. A segment of the population, however, is beginning to view cognitive behavioral and therapeutic approaches as more effective for the treatment of depression. Hypnosis as treatment for depression has been brought to the forefront of discussion by many clinicians.

It is important to understand that all hypnosis is self hypnosis.
The hypnotherapist guides and directs the client into the hypnotic state by using certain words and phrases that the unconscious mind understands along with various techniques like deep breathing, imagery or tone of voice.
