In 1955 , 75 Sqd was reformed in Queensland and took deliver of the F-86 Sabre
The Sabre was capable of Mach 1.1 in a shallow dive.
Don't know who was first credited with pushing thru first.
Some Aussie pilots also flew F86's in the Korean conflict and used the earlier F-86 model with less powerful GE engine. These were also capable of Mach 1....but required significantly more motivation.

With respect to Brig Gen Chuck Yeager..there is considerable speculation that a North American XF-86 (prototype to the F-86) exceeded Mach 1 before the Bell X-I as it was in trial flights the same Oct 1947 as the Bell X-1. Million had been poured into the X-plane program and to have a pre-production aircraft beat it across Mach one...would have been a bit embarassing!

I think he was not an Aussie but an American....Captain CHUCK (CHARLES) YEAGER who broke the sound barrier and he was also the first person to use parachute after falling free from a height of 52,000 feets burning his body severely...but he survived!

The aircraft was the Bell X-1.

Further...John Derry became the first British pilot to break the sound barrier....
