In India, there is reservation for some of the castes which were in the lower strata. Just to bring them to the mainstream, they are given reservation in educational institutions and government jobs. This was done at the time of independence and first limited to 10 years. But, it is still being continued in the garb of Social Justice, which is an eye wash, but being done for their votes. Some old disgruntled politicians are now talking of job reservation in private sector companies also. This is for people from other countries who have not heard of RESERVATION.
Now there is a single word answer for this question: VOTES

exactly..there should not be any reservation on caste basis...the only basis for reservation (if at all it is needed)should be on economic basis rather than caste....its a well known fact that all those sc/st who take the benefit of reservation are from well-to-do families...and those who actually require these benefits are being starved of it...
the basic idea of reserving seats was to help the poor section of the society so that they also get equal and adequate oppurtunities to do well in life....but what is being happening here is just opposite of wht it ws meant for....
a boy from a poor section of the society who belongs to general category cant even think of gettin into a good institute coz neither he has the means and also the number of seats for him is less(thanks to reservation...)
in my view caste should never be the basisof reservation....if at all you want to help the poor section of the society keep the basis of reservation as economic condition rather than the cast factor...

the reservation based on caste, has really helped many people from depressedcommunities in India.Lot of development has taken place since independence, but fruits of development have reached few lucky ones only, leaving behind many S.C, S.T.and BACKWARDCLASSES,who are now living below poverty line.Their percentage in the population is 35% approximately. For their development, the reservation on caste basis must continue.
