"Norton" is a better option for you but remember one thing that, Anti-virus software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority of spyware and privacy threats. Because spyware is commonly bundled with software downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks it can appear to be legitimate software, but once installed it can be nearly impossible to detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware removal tool.

If you are going to use Norton Antivirus then I suggest you that you should also use the good antispyware software such as NoAdware.

You can free download from this link: -http://www.noadware.biz.ly

Well, here is the deal... Norton has more defs. but it is a whole lot bigger program than McAfee. Also if you mess up when one of the initial pop ups come up warning you that something is trying to access the web and you press block, your whole system is messed up. It is also very hard to fix. I set on-line with Microsoft for hours trying to fix it. Even uninstalling Norton did not fix the problem. I ended up having to wipe out my whole system and start new. I don't mean a system restore, I mean completely deleting my hard drive and reformatting it.

But if you do everything right, Norton is a good program. Another bad thing is that it is sooo large! It takes up ALOT of space.

Now, McAfee I have had no problems with. I got it free with my paid subscription to MSN. It has kept my computer clean forever. It also doesn't take up much space. Now, it doesn't have as many virus definitions and it doesn't search as many files as Norton but I have found it to be sufficient.

Hope this helps

Of the two I would pick neither... but since you have limited my choices I would have to go with McAfee, Norton is notoriously hard to uninstall esp if it breaks. Both are slow and use a good about of system resources. The best anti virus is no anti virus and a cautious user, but most people can not accept the level of responsibility required.

Neather, both are memory hogs.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

That's like asking which is better, a Ford or a Dodge. You're going to find people on both side who vigorously defend their favorite and trash talk the competitor.

No AV program is 100% effective..... not Norton, not McAfee, not AVG..... none of them! So pick one (or many) that you find easy to use, that offer updates at least weekly if not daily, and use it. Just don't have 2 AV programs running live (real-time) scans at the same time. They will try to nuke each other and your computer could crash.

I never had any luck with McAfee, every time I tried it, it caused my computer to lock up. Now I stick with Norton.
