Linux - there are tons of different distribution's. Search it. And it also happens to be the only alternative, I think, at the desktop level.

Obviously Linux, Red Hat is the best ..Apart from that many other good free Linux OS are also available like Mandrake

The best alternative to windows is linux . The best distribution is Ubuntu. Also knoppix is a good distribution.
