How long after the sell-by date will eggs stay good in a refrigertor and is there any way to tell if they're bad other than breaking them open and smelling them?

I want to make some chicken salad and I need a hard-boiled egg, but I usually only eat egg-beaters and the package on this pack of eggs had a sell-by date of 7-05-2006. The fridge is really chilly on the inside, so do you think that it'll still be good?

*It is marked with a packed on date and a sell by date. It doesn't have a use by date.

Thanks everyone! I dropped it in a deep mixing bowl filled with water and it sank. It wasn't like a rock at the bottom, one end bobbed a little, but it stayed on the bottom. Time for some chicken salad and sour cream muffins, yay!

Here is how to tell if they are still fresh after the expiration date:
Fill a deep bowl or pan with enough cold tap water to cover an egg.
Place the egg in the water.
If the egg lies on its side on the bottom, the air cell within is small and it's very fresh.
If the egg stands up and bobs on the bottom, the air cell is larger and it isn't quite as fresh.
If the egg floats on the surface, it it should be discarded.
A very fresh egg out of the shell will have an overall thick white which doesn't spread much and the yolk will stand up.

Q. How long will eggs keep?
A. Fresh eggs, which are kept refrigerated, will last 4 to 5 weeks. Raw whites (out of the shell) will keep up to 4 days if refrigerated in a tightly closed container. Unbroken raw yolk should be covered with water in a tightly closed refrigerated container and used within 1 to 2 days.

In a cold fridge, eggs will keep for several weeks beyond to expire date. Like on a lot of foods, that is the date until which freshness is guaranteed. When that date comes and goes, most of the food remains plenty wholesome and tasty.

Just an FYI, but you can freeze eggs. Get plastic ice cube trays and break an egg into each little cube. There will be leftover egg white. You can save it the same way, for KKK omelet (whites only). After they freeze hard like rocks, you can take them out of the tray and keep them in a bag or box.

These frozen eggs won't do for eggs over easy, of course, but they work just fine in cakes or meatloaf. So if you are feeling disturbed about "aging" eggs in your fridge, you can always freeze to use later.

How Long Do Eggs Last

I agree completely with Pathfinder!

I work in a Dairy where the workers always get to take home outdated Milk, Yogurts, Juices, etc...Just because the Expiration Dates don't allow time for shipping to Stores to sell them before That Date!

Just remember that these are Government-Regulated Expiry Dates....They prefer to err on the Safe-Side!...Making Sure there's no Problems that will come back on them!

I've used Milk up to 2 weeks & Eggs up to 6 weeks beyond expiry dates without a problem...But, I know where they've been kept & at What-Temperatures...Basically, Rely on your Senses...If it smells, tastes, or looks off - Just throw it out...if borderline, You can probably get away with using as a cooking ingredient...and, cooking it well!

The eggs from our chicken I cover in a thin layer of vegetable oil so they last for months and months. Eggs must be oiled 24 hours after it has been fresh laid. It s a small "prepping trick" I learned from friends of ours. As soon as I get them into the house I take them out of the carton one by one and roll them in a shallow dish of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. (Don t think the quality of oil matters much) I than put them in to an egg carton. Never wash or dry buff any egg, it takes away the thin protective coating found naturley on any egg and will allow air and bacteria to grow thus shorting the shelf life of the egg. I ve been rolling our eggs in oil for years and this process has never let our family down.

The expiration date on food items is only a guideline as to the freshness of the product. As long as the food product is kept under the right conditions, it is good way past the expiration date. I would not hesitate to use expired goods that I know is still good.

I know that if you put the egg in a glass of water and if the egg floats it is not good but if it sinks to the bottom it is good to cook and eat.

If it's from the 5th... then it could be ok...

To check and see, get a glass full of water and put the egg in...

If it sinks, then its still ok... but if it floats then it's gone off.
