The D70(s) is a better camera. The fact that is costs more is justified. You wont see much of a difference in image quality however. What makes the D70 better is the extra features (like spot metering) and the better build quality.
In turn, the Rebel XT is better and more expensive than the Nikon D50.
If you don't need the extra features, don't pay for them. Even the D50 takes excellent pictures.

I personally own a Nikon D70. I really enjoy the camera. I won't repeat what other's have said about the features. It simply has more features.
When compared to the rebel xt, I find the D70 feels better. The XT feels a little cheap. I don't like the grip for some reason or other. However, I find the Canon 10 d series to feel much better than the D70. This is something you should try at a camera store. Everyone will have different opinions.
For me, the deciding factor for the Nikon was the fact that a huge percentage of older Nikon lenses can be used on the D70. I do a lot of landscape photography, and I am also a student. This means the ability to use the older Nikon manual lenses (AIS) really helps. They are cheaper and most of them have better optical quality and build quality than the newer AF cousins. (you'll never get me to part with my 28mm f2.8)
This is not true with Canon.
By the way, should you go the D70 route, get the kit lens! It is an excellent lens. I made the mistake of buying the body only and buying a tamron zoom lens thinking of saving some money. I ended up selling it and buying a used 18-70mm. It is a serious lens and has great optical performance.

I don't have any of those I WISH.
But if I have to buy one it will be the Nikon D70, the pictures of that camera Are amazing.

D70 has more features, but I like the canon cameras better. They just feel better... if that makes sense. I would suggest you play with one in a camera store or somewhere and see which brand feels right to you.
