Because water is the number two most inmportant thing humans need to survive, the number one being oxygen. A human being can only survive a few days without water and the desert has little of it compared to most other places on earth.

Tough? I found it marvellous! Wonderful! Exilirating! My years in Arizona and New Mexico and the Sonoran Desert were the best of my life! Can't wait to go back!

cause water, the prime source of life is virtually non existent there and then extreme weather conditions prevent people from settling there. there is sand everywhere and even the wind carries it, in your face and eyes and food and everywhere. there are no trees, so there is no shades of green, only brown and cream everywhere. you have to be tough and uncomfortable being there, so no one wants to be uncomfortable, everyone wants water and trees and no one wants sand in your foot, mouth, eyes and food. so how can you call the place comfortable ,it has to be tough as it is a tough job to stay there .

You should try to have a picnic there.
My family and I, on a road trip, had brought a lunch.
We tried to find a shady spot, none.
Finally my wife said, "There's a cloud and shade".
So we got in the shade of the cloud and unpacked lunch.
Then the damned cloud moved, so we grabbed everything and followed it. We move about three times before we finished eating.

i would say because
- it gets quite hot during the day and very cold during the night
- there are not many plants or animals to eat and you need to know how to find them
- there's not much water and it is also hard to find
- it takes a lot longer to go from A to B (need a camel or an appropriate car)
- there are no or little streets. you really need to know your way
that's all that came to my mind.
