I used McAfee, on one of my laptops Symantec Antivirus, but on most of my Windows systems: http://www.avast.com/
Basically because it is free and regularly gives me warnings about dangerous stuff so i know it works.
The McAfee SiteAdvisor is handy to check whether sites contain bad content or not (also free, a firefox extension).

No exist, all can fail, depends of your system, but you can use AVG its freeware, also use kaspersky, panda, mcafee, and norton, you can try to use a firewall for more protection (i recommend ZonaAlarm),
