I am sorry to tell you that all the answers you have received before were not correct. For one thing, I is not a noun, it is a pronoun, and all the other pronouns like you, he, she, it, we and they are not written with an initial capital letter.
The real reason is that I consists of only one letter, and the rule in English is that all words which have only one letter must be written with a capital letter. That is why we say O God, and not o God.

According to The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology (Wilson, 1988)
"Modern and Middle English I developed from earlier i in the stressed position. I came to be written with a capital letter thereby making it a distinct word and avoiding misreading handwritten manuscripts."

Because it's a noun and all noun's start with a capital letter but a noun is a proper name, or place.

Because it is a proper noun. It is referring to a person, and you always capitalize a person's name.

I think its because when you refer to "I" in a sentence, the "I" takes the places of someones name i.e. talking about yourself. You will always spell a persons name with a capital e.g. John, Jo.... therefore "I" is referring to yourself rather than putting your name everytime?
No expert but that is my argument I think!
