Forensic Psychiatrists determine a suspect's mental state (at the tine of the crime and otherwise) and whether he/she is competent to stand trial (the ever famous insanity defense). They often testify during trials to offer their opinion on issues like how or what the suspect was thinking during a trial, whether the suspect has a mental disease, etc.

There's much more to the job- this is just a general description.

Forensic Psychiatry is most familiar to me through the tv show Law & Order SVU (Special Victims Unit). One of the characters on the show is Dr. George Huang, a forensic psychiatrist. (he's played by B.D. Wong who also voiced Captain Li Shang in Mulan). I know this is a fictional representation of what forensic psychiatrists do, but this is how I learned about it.
