I can hardly sleep @ all. Even doubling up on my prescription sleep medication, I still wake up about every hour or so & get up for a few minutes. It's driving me crazy. It's like I lay down & all my thoughts, worries & problems start swirling through my head. I don't seem to fall asleep until the sun comes up. I've been depressed. Been looking for a job. But lately, I've gotten in the BAD habit of not falling asleep until the sun is up, then sleeping till after noon (having nightmares & waking up all through the night). And I'm still tired, no many how many hours of sleep I do get. With no kind of sleeping pills, I can't even start to fall asleep. I have no insurance anymore, recently lost it. I need to find a way to sleep @ night, @ a decent hour, fall asleep quickly, feel comfortable while sleeping & wake up feeling refreshed & alert. Any suggestions? (Plus, I want off sleeping pills, I'd love to be able to live w/out them)

Okay, this may get long but I had the same problem last year while my husband was deployed to Iraq so I just want to share a few solutions in hopes of helping you out. I know it's an extremely hard and frustrating position to be in.

First of all, I know you said your insurance has lapsed, but if at all possible see a doctor. There could very possibly be an underlying medical issue causing your sleeplessness. Depression is definitely a cause for sleeplessness and/or restless sleep!!!

It is important that you only use your bed for sleeping and by that I mean don't use your bed to watch television, read, eat, study, etc. As crazy as it sounds, your body eventually learns that once you're in bed, then it needs to sleep (not play.) Treat yourself like a toddler. =0)

Also, try writing in a journal before going to bed (don't write in bed though.) Write down any problems you're facing or just random thoughts. Try to clear your head before your head hits the pillow and hopefully those thoughts that keep you awake will stay on paper and not swirl in your mind.

Start an excercise routine and adopt a healthier diet. Along those lines, drink LOTS of water. I don't know why this helps but it worked for me. Also, instead of taking sleeping pills, my doctor suggested taking melatonin. You can find it in the vitamin section of any store.

Lastly and probably the hardest. Keep yourself awake. In the morning (or afternoon) when you wake up keep yourself awake through that day, night and the next day. By the time 'bedtime' rolls around on day 2 your body will be ready for rest. Go to bed at a decent time and sleep until you wake up.

Again, I apologize for the length of this response. Please see a doctor when you can and I'm wishing sweet dreams to you. I pray that this helps you!!

Well use sleeping pills to get you in the habit, but here's some things that can help. Make your bedroom a room for sleeping, nothing else, like get your TV, or radio, or the likes out of there. Try to go to sleep everynight at the same time, interrupting schedules messes your body up and can put people in a situation like yourself. Lets see, my favorite, take a relaxing warm bath right before bedtime. See depression and anxiety can cause sleep disorders such as too much, or not enough sleep, so see your doctor about xanex or paxil or something like that.

My mum had the same problem still does sometimes. I suggest you get away for a few days if you cant afford it try going to a relatives or something a couple of days in a country hotel sounds relaxing they have spas and things like that. But other than that I cant think of a way. Try and get help to deal with your problems and worries talk to someone your family or a councilour don't be ashamed to people do all the time. Its not strange to not be able to sleep. Good luck I hope you get some good sleep soon.
