I was thinking of going with Philips, they make a 34 inch model and my family has a 29" philips TV that's alive and kicking after 17 years. I'm not considering an LCD or Plasma or Projection based set since I'll have to leave it behind when I move.

There are CRT sets available that accept HD signals; I believe Sony makes some, although they are a dying breed. They are still the lowest cost way to get HDTV. The picture will look quite good, even though the CRT is not capable of displaying the full resolution of either 720 or 1080 line pictures. Howver, because of the small screen size, and the tendency not to sit close to CRT screens, the higher resolution would not add much. I have a CRT HDTV 32", and the difference between HDTV and a good DVD is barely noticeable. In fact, some people feel that HDTV really does not make sense for anything less than a 40" TV

For your information, CRT TV does not support HDTV content.
I'll say, you might want to look deep into the HDTV features offered by the LCD or Plasma TV instead. e.g.

720p type HDTV refers to a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1280 x 720.

1080i type HDTV refers to a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1920 x1080.
