Hi, I lived for several years in Korea, and one thing you quickly notice is the paucity of large companies, and the lack of competition Korean companies face from outside companies, Generally, one or two large corporations dominate an industry, or several industries. For example, it's not uncommon for an car company (Hyundai) to also build apartment buildings! (These conglomerates are called 'Chaebol' in Korean)
While Koreans are hard-working, and intelligent, many of these companies got large, and stay successful, owing to government protections. (The Korean gov't would never allow foreign competitors to decimate their automotive industry, as America has, for example.) These protections ensure the health of these companies, the employees' jobs, and ultimately the country's economy.
Briefly, a list of some major 'Chaebol' and their main business:
Samsung - Electronics
LG - Appliances
Daewoo - Cars
Hyundai - Cars
KT&G - Cigarettes
Lotte - Food
Nongshim - Noodles
Jinro - Alcohol
Hanshin - Shipping
Korean Airlines
Asiana Airlines
KB Bank

Samsung is a huge Korean company. I don't know if it is the biggest, but if not it is close. They have gotten there by technical innovation and good general business practices of keeping costs low and increasing profitability of their products. I also believe they are subsidized (or have been) by the government. This is especially common in Asian countries, and not uncommon for leading companies anywhere in the world.
Hyundai and Daewoo are also a large Korean companies. Both are primarily automobile manufacturers.
