What makes any business succesful, anywhere, is your own desire to do it. The definition of success varies from person to person and should/cannot be measured only in financial terms.
If you take a Thai lady who has nothing and limited choices in life and put her out on the street roasting pork satay all day in the hot sun, w/the smoke in her eyes and face, selling to passersby and she earns $5 a day - more than twice what she earns in a hard day rice farming, she will be happy - and succesful.. If you offer the same oppt to a Western businessman, he will be miserable.
However, the most important aspect is doing something that you enjoy.. You can make alot of money in the western world being a garbage man.. but let happiness and satisfaction enter into all and every equation - and then you have a real chance at success.

Any jewekery/gem businesses do incredibly well. I have a friend (An American citizen) who retired from his job as a Wall Street Analyst and took his 401K and moved to Bangkok where he opened a jewelery store. he is doing very well and as an expat has been able to make a number of contacts at embassies who now reccomend his business to foreign travellers. However there are a number of opportunities for business in Thailand. The country's wealthiest man (also Prime Minister) got rich in the mobile telecommunications business. Thais love to "communicate" and his wealth and companies are proof! The other large companies are conglomerates such as CP group that does everything from food to fish to stores. Central Group does retail distribution. Tipco does everything from orange juice to asphalt.

Thai politicians who got contract from Burmese government to log teak wood in Burma. Those who got fishing rights in Burma. eg Chavalit and Thaksin. Thaksin got rich with telecoms contract in Thailand. Thailand businesses are in Chinese Thai people like in Malaysia and Indonesia. There is corruption in big way.

it's a sad thing for a country, but as a matter of fact, most people would agree with me that it's true.

imagine of a product all of us needs and has to purchase. the corporate that makes that product would not neccessarily be the most worthwhile simply by embezzlement or mismanagement, regardless of the indisputable fact that it must be up on ther scale.
